en.Wedoany.com Reported - Wirral Council has approved a Pre-Construction Services Agreement with Krol Corlett Construction, with construction and fit-out works for Birkenhead Market expected to commence in the coming days at the former TJ Hughes building.
In November 2025, Wirral Council's Economy, Regeneration and Housing Committee agreed to relocate traders individually or collectively to refurbished units within Birkenhead town centre, followed by the demolition of the existing market site for future use. Discussions with market traders continue as the proposed market scheme progresses. The goal is to create a new market within the former TJ Hughes unit to maximise footfall and provide a welcoming environment for the public.
Wirral Council Leader Councillor Paula Basnett said this marks the beginning of a new chapter for Birkenhead Market and the entire town centre. She noted that extensive work has been done behind the scenes to reach this stage and is delighted that people will soon see the transformation of the former TJ Hughes site into the town's new market begin. She added that the greatest strength of Birkenhead Market has always been the people who make it what it is, and despite challenges in recent years, traders have continued to serve customers and support the market. Their cooperation and commitment have been crucial in bringing the market to this stage and will continue to play a key role in creating a market fit for the future.
Daniel Tebay, Managing Director of Krol Corlett Construction, said the development will help create a modern destination while respecting the market's rich heritage and its central role in the local community. He expressed pride in contributing to this vision and delivering a project that will benefit traders, visitors, and the wider Birkenhead area for years to come.
