en.Wedoany.com Reported - Seaspan and Maersk are expanding their long-term partnership by launching a vessel energy efficiency program for 18 container ships on long-term charter to the Danish shipping giant. The program aims to improve fuel efficiency, cargo capacity, operational flexibility, and emissions performance of the shared charter fleet.

At the core of the program is the retrofit of a group of four 13,000 TEU vessels, considered one of the most significant upgrades in the Seaspan-Maersk charter fleet. The work includes installing shaft generators to reduce auxiliary engine fuel consumption, main engine performance optimization, replacing propellers with high-efficiency ones and adding pre-swirl devices to improve propulsion performance, as well as carbon capture readiness to prepare the vessels for future emissions regulations.

Lashing bridges will also be raised to increase container capacity, while deadweight tonnage will be improved to enhance loading capability. The comprehensive package is expected to reduce slot costs by approximately 10% to 13%, while improving fuel efficiency and regulatory readiness.

The total investment for the completed and planned upgrades of the 18-vessel fleet is approximately $75 million, with more initiatives under development.

Additionally, WattSpan, a Seaspan maritime technology and engineering joint venture focused on vessel performance and decarbonization, has signed a non-binding memorandum of cooperation with Maersk and COSCO Shipyard. This one-year framework covers collaboration on vessel upgrades, energy efficiency improvements, and maritime decarbonization technologies.

Dimitrios Panagopoulos, Chief Fleet Operations Officer at Seaspan, stated that this partnership demonstrates how tangible and high-impact collaboration can drive large-scale decarbonization.
