en.Wedoany.com Reported - Four major telecom operators in Peru—Claro (América Móvil), Entel, Movistar (Integratel), and Bitel (Viettel)—will invest 182 million soles (over $53 million) to connect 412 locations across 22 regions of the country with 4G technology for the first time, expected to provide high-speed voice and data services to more than 66,000 residents.

This investment is implemented through the Coverage Royalty (Canon por Cobertura) mechanism, following agreements signed by the parent companies of the aforementioned operators with the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) of Peru. Minister of Transport and Communications Aldo Prieto Barrera stated at the signing ceremony that this progress is the result of promoting the Coverage Royalty mechanism and the special payment system for commercial development rates, which convert telecom companies' economic obligations into investments, helping to accelerate the narrowing of the connectivity gap.

Remote areas in Peru have long faced insufficient communication infrastructure. Previous rounds of the Coverage Royalty mechanism have enabled operators to allocate 60% of radio spectrum usage fees to 4G infrastructure construction in rural areas. To date, this mechanism has allowed 296,000 residents in 1,531 remote areas to access education, healthcare, financial services, and e-commerce through fourth-generation mobile networks.

The services are expected to be fully operational within one year, i.e., by June 2027. Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Raúl García Loli and Claro Peru Regulatory Director Juan Rivadeneyra also attended the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of continuing project implementation to expand connectivity.

América Móvil revealed that between 2018 and 2025, its Peruvian subsidiary connected over 2,400 locations nationwide by deploying 388 wireless base stations, benefiting 493,000 Peruvians. Claro reaffirmed its commitment to expanding mobile network coverage and stated that it will continue investing in infrastructure to promote inclusivity and narrow the service gap.
