en.Wedoany.com Reported - Sungrow has completed and commissioned the Sandong 100 MW/400 MWh energy storage station in Terengganu, Malaysia. This is the country's first grid-connected energy storage project with grid-forming capability, laying a crucial foundation for local grid upgrades and large-scale integration of renewable energy. The project is wholly owned and developed by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia's national power utility. Its core role is to enhance grid disturbance resilience, stabilize power system operation, and meet Malaysia's growing demand for new energy grid integration.

Sungrow provided a complete integrated energy storage solution for the project, including 90 sets of PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage systems, along with a plant-level energy management system (FEMS) for intelligent dispatch and flexible grid support. In its first year of operation, the Sandong energy storage station is expected to achieve a comprehensive round-trip efficiency of 88%, while supporting both grid-following and grid-forming modes to comprehensively enhance grid stability.

The energy storage equipment is equipped with multiple advanced grid support functions, including fast frequency response, rapid active power regulation, and voltage and reactive power control. Leveraging its grid-forming capability, it can autonomously stabilize grid voltage and frequency. The station also features full black-start capability, enabling it to independently restore grid power supply after a complete blackout without requiring an external power reference.

Sungrow stated that, leveraging the collaborative efforts of its local service, project delivery, and R&D teams, the project adopted an accelerated delivery plan throughout its implementation. During the project rollout, the company helped Malaysia establish local industry standards for grid-forming energy storage. The project's grid connection speed ranked among the fastest in Malaysia's energy storage sector, setting a record for the quickest delivery of a local energy storage project, and successfully passed a 100 MW full-power discharge test. Malaysia's Minister of Energy and Deputy Prime Minister have both acknowledged the project's value in advancing the country's energy transition.

TNB Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Razak Abdul Majid commented that the Sandong energy storage station is a landmark project for upgrading Malaysia's power system and accelerating the grid integration of new energy. The millisecond-level fast response capability of the energy storage system can significantly enhance power supply reliability, covering the electricity load of approximately 40,000 households on Malaysia's east coast.

The official commissioning of the Sandong energy storage station further advances the modernization of Malaysia's power infrastructure. Malaysia is actively deploying large-scale centralized energy storage projects to drive the achievement of its clean energy transition goals.
