en.Wedoany.com Reported - The municipal utility company Stadtwerke Husum GmbH in the city of Husum, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, has commissioned Essen-based DMT GmbH & Co. KG to conduct a feasibility study for a planned geothermal heating project.

The results of the feasibility study are expected by the end of the year. If the findings are positive, the project will proceed to a further seismic survey phase and initiate the approval process for test drilling.

Earlier this year, Stadtwerke Husum received a grant of €152,000 from the municipal heating fund of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature (MEKUN) of Schleswig-Holstein to support this study. Matthias Forthmann of Stadtwerke Husum stated that the study will evaluate geological data and seismic survey results to build a subsurface model of the study site.

In addition to geological conditions, the study will also examine potential drilling locations and their connection to existing or planned district heating networks. The ultimate goal is to determine the economic viability of the project, as well as potential risks and environmental impacts.

In 2024, the Lower Saxony State Authority for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG) granted the utility company a two-year exploration license for the project site. At the beginning of this year, the license was extended by two years, valid until February 2028. Since March 2024, results from a preliminary study previously obtained by the energy supplier have strongly indicated the presence of hot water at depths of 2,000 to 2,500 meters, with temperatures ranging from 60 to 75 degrees Celsius.
