en.Wedoany.com Reported - The City of Toronto has approved and will open a new library branch in the Quayside district, a new waterfront community. Following approval by the City Council at its June meeting, the City, Toronto Public Library (TPL), and Waterfront Toronto jointly announced the plan.

The project builds on over a decade of joint planning by TPL and the City to expand eastern waterfront library services. New library branches typically take five to ten years to complete, so securing space in Quayside early in the development process ensures the branch can open as the community grows and serve residents for years to come.

As the project progresses, TPL will conduct community consultations, allowing residents to provide input on the branch's planning, services, and collections. Consultations will begin after the architectural firm responsible for interior design is selected, a process expected to start in 2028.

Quayside is described as one of the city's most significant residential development projects. The first phase will provide approximately 563 affordable rental units and 1,170 market rental units. About 57% of the affordable units are two-bedroom, three-bedroom, and four-bedroom units suitable for families. The developer is Dream Unlimited Corp.

The Quayside branch is part of a larger plan to serve the waterfront. A second branch is planned for Ookwemin Minising, a nearby emerging island community. By incorporating the library into the first phase of development, the branch can be built without requiring a tax capital grant from the City. The podium building is funded through community benefit contributions, with the developer delivering the completed podium building, land, and city access. TPL is responsible for the design, construction, and furnishing of the interior space.
