en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group has commenced the sea trial phase for its newly built dedicated passenger ferry, Scillonian IV. The vessel will begin sea trials in Vietnam this week, departing from the Piriou shipyard in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday, sailing along the Nhà Bè River into the South China Sea, and conducting tests off the coast of Vung Tau.

During the sea trials, the crew will rigorously test the vessel's performance, maneuverability, propulsion system, and onboard systems to ensure compliance with design specifications and international standards. Tests include speed and operational performance assessments, as well as deployment verification of critical equipment such as anchors and lifeboats. The ship's captain, Joe Whetton, technical director Luke Parnell, and engineer Jonathan Jackman will accompany the project team to Vietnam to observe the trials on-site, collaborating with the Piriou shipyard and Lloyds Register, marking the beginning of the familiarization process for Scillonian IV.
Stuart Reid, CEO of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, stated that the sea trials are a significant step toward Scillonian IV entering service next year and a critical phase in the shipbuilding process, providing an opportunity for comprehensive testing under operational conditions before the vessel nears completion. Following successful sea trials, Scillonian IV will undergo final outfitting and certification, after which it will be delivered and sail to the UK, ready for service.
Once completed, Scillonian IV will accommodate up to 600 passengers, a 24% increase in capacity compared to the current vessel, and will reduce voyage times. The ship is equipped with roll and pitch stabilization systems to enhance passenger comfort and features modern propulsion technology designed to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The Steamship Group stated that this vessel renewal program is one of the most significant investments in its corporate history, reaffirming its commitment to supporting island communities by improving passenger and freight services. Together with the new cargo ship Menawethan, which officially entered service this week, the two vessels represent a total investment of £40 million, aimed at providing modern, resilient, and fit-for-purpose passenger and freight services for the Isles of Scilly.
