Yanmar GH-FC Series Marine Hydrogen Fuel Cell System Receives DNV Type Approval

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 7, DNV announced that it had issued a Type Approval to Yanmar Power Solutions' GH-FC series marine hydrogen fuel cell system during the SMM maritime trade fair in Hamburg, Germany. This certification confirms that the GH-FC series complies with DNV's relevant rules and technical guidelines, and can be used for system integration and class certification in future vessel projects.

The GH-FC series is specifically developed for marine applications and features a modular design, currently available in 80 kW, 160 kW, 240 kW, and 320 kW output configurations that can be combined according to different vessel types and onboard power demands. The system generates electricity through the electrochemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, producing no direct carbon dioxide emissions during operation. The DNV Type Approval covers the GH-FC series marine fuel cell system, not Yanmar's hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine products that previously received certification.

Yanmar began developing hydrogen fuel cell technology in 2015 and commercialized its marine hydrogen fuel cell system in 2023. The GH-FC series has now been adopted across various vessel types, including the passenger ship "HANARIA" operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Technical Trade Co., the Tokyo Metropolitan Government work vessels "Tokyo Mirai Maru" and "Tsukiji ZERO", the aquaculture feed vessel "ZERO-E Kurose" operated by Kurose Suisan, and the dining cruise ship "AMANE" currently under construction for NYK Line.

Among these, NYK Line, Yanmar Power Solutions, and ENEOS confirmed in June 2026 the installation of the system on the AMANE, which will be paired with hydrogen storage modules supplied by Toyota Motor Corporation. This project marks the fifth practical application of Yanmar's marine hydrogen fuel cell system, with the vessel scheduled to enter service in spring 2027.

DNV's certification builds on Yanmar's existing domestic commercialization and vessel installations in Japan. With the Type Approval obtained, the GH-FC series can directly enter the design and certification process as an approved product in future projects adopting DNV class rules.
