en.Wedoany.com Reported - Drax has invested £2 million to complete the refurbishment of one of Scotland's oldest hydroelectric power stations, preserving its historic architecture while continuing its renewable energy generation function.

Tongland Power Station, located near Kirkcudbright, is part of the Galloway Hydro Scheme. This scheme consists of a series of dams, reservoirs, and power stations built in the 1930s, and its six hydroelectric facilities have provided renewable electricity to Scotland for nearly 90 years.

The refurbishment focused on repairing the station's external structure using specialist materials to provide long-term protection for this Category A listed building. Historic Environment Scotland recognizes the significance of Tongland Power Station to the development of hydroelectric power and describes it as having a "modernist classical design with fine detailing."

In addition to the building facade repairs, Drax has upgraded the on-site exhibition space, enabling the station to once again host school visits. Further refurbishment of the building's interior paintwork is planned for later this year.

Ian Kinnaird, FlexGen Assets Director at Drax, said: "The Galloway Hydro Scheme has been providing flexible renewable electricity for 90 years, and this major refurbishment means it will continue to do so for many years to come." He also emphasized: "This was a complex project, and Drax and its contract partners were very careful to protect this historic building during the construction process. Tongland Power Station has been part of Scotland's energy story for nearly a century, and everyone involved should be immensely proud to see it looking refreshed."

The Tongland project is part of Drax's broader investment plan in Scotland.
