Water level at Vietnam's Tri An Hydropower Reservoir exceeds 57 meters, inflow rises to 1,190 cubic meters per second

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 7, the water level at the Tri An Hydropower Reservoir in Dong Nai Province, Vietnam, rose to over 57 meters. Affected by recent continuous rainfall, the inflow has increased significantly. Morning monitoring data on the same day showed that the reservoir's inflow was approximately 1,190 cubic meters per second, continuing to rise from earlier levels. The Tri An Reservoir is one of the major large reservoirs in southern Vietnam, serving functions such as power generation, flood control, water supply, and downstream flow regulation.

The Tri An Hydropower Plant currently has 4 generating units with a total installed capacity of 400MW. Its annual power generation in 2025 reached 1.922 billion kWh, completing 114.8% of the plan assigned by Vietnam Electricity (EVN). On September 6, the national hydropower generation of Vietnam was 267.1 million kWh, and hydropower remained one of the important power sources in the country's electricity system that day.

In addition to hydropower production, the Tri An Reservoir also undertakes functions such as flood control for the lower Dong Nai River, domestic and agricultural water supply, and salinity intrusion suppression. The reservoir's surface area is approximately 323 square kilometers. At the end of September 2025, when the upstream water level of the reservoir rose to 60.9 meters and the inflow reached 1,960 cubic meters per second, the operator initiated flood discharge operations and gradually increased the total discharge flow to 1,070–1,140 cubic meters per second. The current water level of over 57 meters has not yet reached the aforementioned historical dispatch level, but as rainfall increases in the southern region in September, the reservoir's inflow and subsequent dispatch operations still require continued attention.

Meanwhile, Vietnam Electricity is implementing the Tri An Hydropower Plant expansion project. The total investment for the expansion project is approximately 3.965 trillion Vietnamese dong, adding an installed capacity of 200MW, configured with two 100MW generating units. The project commenced in the third quarter of 2025, with the first unit planned to be commissioned in the third quarter of 2027 and the second unit in the fourth quarter. Upon full completion, the total installed capacity of the Tri An Hydropower Plant will increase from 400MW to 600MW.

As of the end of June 2026, the earthwork excavation for the powerhouse foundation pit of the expansion project has been approximately 99.3% completed, and the earthwork excavation for the intake has been approximately 94.4% completed. The intake cofferdam passed acceptance inspection and was put into use on April 2. After the expansion project is commissioned, it will improve the utilization efficiency of existing hydropower resources without adding new large reservoir inundation areas, while also enhancing the peak-load regulation capability of the southern Vietnam power grid.
