en.Wedoany.com Reported - The UK HS2 high-speed rail project team completed the structural construction of a 16-meter-wide double-box tunnel beneath the village of Burton Green on July 14. The next step will shift to the 500-meter-long "green roof" earthwork above the tunnel, aimed at restoring the original landscape and providing green space for the community at ground level.

Doug Barnett, Senior Project Manager at HS2 Ltd, stated that after the completion of the main civil engineering work, the 150-person on-site team will advance the green roof project, with the goal of collaborating with the local community to bring the landscape design of the Burton Green Tunnel to life and fully unlock the potential of this new green space.
Tim Akers, Design Manager at the joint venture Mott MacDonald/SYSTRA responsible for the design, noted that the design team applied various techniques within the village's narrow construction corridor. The final plan will integrate the railway into the landscape and restore the original appearance of the Kenilworth Greenway, along with its ecological connections to the broader landscape.
In line with HS2's sustainability commitments, materials generated from tunnel excavation have been reused in landscaping works. The construction team plans to plant a large number of native trees and shrubs to provide biodiversity habitats for wildlife and rebuild vegetation connections with Black Waste Wood and Little Poors Wood. HS2's construction partner, Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV), is working with community groups and schools to explore ways to enhance the greenway experience while highlighting the area's landscape, ecological, and heritage features.
