en.Wedoany.com Reported - National Highways, in partnership with the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, has completed the upgrade of an underpass on the M5 near Roebuck Lane in Sandwell. The project aims to encourage local residents to choose active travel options such as walking or cycling, thereby alleviating traffic congestion, improving air quality, and enhancing public health.
The underpass is part of Route 5 of the National Cycle Network. In addition to the mural creation, the upgrade includes the renovation of pedestrian crossings and shared paths, as well as the renewal of lighting facilities. Sandwell Council supported the project by removing large obstacles within the underpass, making it more accessible.

Artist Rob Fenton from the Midlands, with assistance from students at Holy Trinity C of E Primary School, completed the mural. The students shared their understanding of the town's character, drawing from its rich industrial history and cultural landmarks. The artwork incorporates locally significant elements such as the Dartmouth Park pavilion, Oak House Park and Museum, and The Hawthorns stadium, while also paying tribute to the historic crest of West Bromwich Albion FC. The mural also features a portrait of local legend Robert Plant, along with lyrics from the Led Zeppelin song "Kashmir"—which read "Let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream"—the artist noted that this inspires optimism and hope.
Freda Rashdi, Customer Journey Director at National Highways, stated that the underpass is a key route connecting Sandwell's residential areas with its office and commercial districts. By improving lighting and laying new surfaces, more people can safely walk or cycle to their destinations.
