Construction Launched on Ghana's 34km Somanya–Dodowa Road

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 5, construction commenced on the Somanya Roundabout–Dodowa Road and urban roads in Somanya in Ghana's Eastern Region. The project is part of the government's "Big Push" infrastructure initiative, with a 34 km mainline to be built by Oswal Investments Limited. The groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Akutunya Lorry Station in Somanya, and the project connects the Yilo Krobo area of the Eastern Region with Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region.

The scope of the project covers not only the main road from Somanya Roundabout to Dodowa but also selected urban roads within Somanya. This route carries road traffic from Somanya, Odumase-Krobo, and surrounding areas toward Dodowa, with agricultural produce, limestone, and other commercial freight vehicles traveling along it on a regular basis. Local road users had previously noted that the Somanya–Dodowa and adjacent roads handle a high volume of heavy limestone haulage trucks daily, and that some existing sections suffer from pavement deterioration.

The Somanya–Dodowa project had previously been included in Ghana's Big Push road project pipeline. In September 2025, when the Ghanaian government launched the reconstruction of the Dawhenya–Afienya–Dodowa Road, it was already specified that this corridor would subsequently be extended toward Somanya, with the Dodowa–Somanya and Somanya urban roads included in the first batch of Big Push transport projects. The groundbreaking event held on September 5, 2026 marks the entry of this Somanya–Dodowa extension section into the site implementation phase.

Contractor Oswal Investments is also currently implementing the adjacent Adenta–Dodowa Road expansion. That project spans 22 km, was awarded in March 2024 with a contract duration of 36 months, and had reached approximately 63% completion as of May 2026, with completion scheduled for March 2027. Its scope is divided into three sections: approximately 8 km from Adenta Barrier to Katamanso, followed by roughly 6 km, and a final approximately 8 km section to Dodowa Hospital Junction, with road drainage, major intersections, and pedestrian facilities included.

The Dodowa–Afienya–Dawhenya Road, on the other side of Dodowa, has also been incorporated into the Big Push program. According to project documentation from Ghana's Ministry of Roads and Highways, that project has a 24.8 km mainline plus 3 km of town roads, with a contract value of GHS 1,116.98 million. Construction began on September 15, 2025, with completion scheduled for December 4, 2027, and progress currently stands at approximately 35%. The Somanya–Dodowa project connects with these existing construction corridors at Dodowa.

On funding arrangements, Ghana's Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, stated at the project launch event that the Big Push program allocated over GHS 13 billion in 2025 and approximately GHS 30 billion in 2026, with funds primarily directed to road construction; once contractors submit payment certificates for works done, the government plans to disburse payments promptly in accordance with project payment procedures.
