Qatar's Almohannadi Signs USD 147 Million Highway Project in Syria
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 26, Syria's General Authority for Road Transport and Qatar-based road contractor Almohannadi for Roads, Trading and Contracting (MRTC) signed a USD 147 million highway rehabilitation and expansion contract in Damascus. The project covers a 215-kilometer highway in eastern Syria leading to the Iraqi border, comprising a 170-kilometer main road and 45 kilometers of connecting roads. The contract duration is 900 days, and the scope of work includes rehabilitation of the existing road, construction of a second carriageway, and installation of road safety facilities.

The 170-kilometer main road connects the Busayri intersection with the Al-Tanf border crossing on the Syria-Iraq border. The project will rehabilitate and widen the existing highway and build a parallel carriageway to create dual-carriageway traffic conditions. The other 45-kilometer section connects the Sabaa Biyar intersection with Busayri as a supporting link road to the main highway. Construction work also includes rehabilitation of damaged sections, asphalt pavement renewal, road markings, and traffic safety facility installation.
The contract was signed by Muaz Najjar, Director-General of Syria's General Authority for Road Transport, and Abdullah Adnan Zatam, CEO of the contractor. Syrian Minister of Transport Yarub Badr and Minister of Finance Muhammad Yusuf al-Barniyeh attended the signing ceremony. The project was previously awarded to the Qatari contractor in September, when the estimated value was announced at USD 150 million with a planned duration of 800 days; the contract formally signed in October set the amount at USD 147 million and adjusted the performance period to 900 days.
Prior to the formal signing, Syria's General Authority for Road Transport and the contractor had already conducted road surveying for the project. Progress updates released on October 19 showed that the surveying team used 3D mobile mapping technology to complete the survey of the 215-kilometer route within 7 hours, with the data used for road condition assessment and subsequent rehabilitation and expansion design.
The project is part of Syria's national main highway rehabilitation program launched in 2026. The Ministry of Transport also plans to arrange 6 road construction contracts and 3 engineering supervision contracts. The Al-Tanf–Busayri highway is part of Syria's eastern overland transport corridor, connecting Mediterranean coastal ports with the Iraqi border through Syria's domestic road network.
