Completion of the AUD 7.2 Million Freight Corridor Intersection Upgrade in Australia

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 10, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport of South Australia announced that the upgrade of the intersection of Porter Street, Liverpool Street, and Railway Place in Port Lincoln has been completed. The project represents a total investment of AUD 7.2 million, jointly funded by the Australian Federal Government and the South Australian State Government through the Safer Local Roads Infrastructure Program, primarily to improve heavy vehicle access conditions along the important freight and grain transport corridor of the Eyre Peninsula.

This intersection is located at a key node where Lincoln Highway enters the Port Lincoln urban area, serving the dual function of local street traffic and port freight transport. Approximately 10,300 vehicles pass through daily, of which more than 1,400 are heavy vehicles, accounting for about 14% of total traffic. After Lincoln Highway enters the urban area via Liverpool Street, it connects to the port direction through Porter Street and Railway Place, making it an important route for grain and other cargo transport on the Eyre Peninsula.

The project involved the installation of a new traffic signal system and pedestrian push-button controlled crossing facilities in all four directions of the intersection, along with new road markings, curbs and drainage facilities, LED lighting, and landscaping works. During construction, traffic arrangements at the intersection were also adjusted to improve the turning and passage capacity of large trucks.

The project officially commenced on February 9, 2026, after which the construction contractor advanced the construction of traffic signals, roads, and supporting facilities through daytime, nighttime, and weekend operations. According to the project page of the Department for Infrastructure and Transport of South Australia, the works were completed in August 2026.

The project was initially planned in 2024 with an investment of approximately AUD 4.5 million, at which time it was funded by the Federal Government and the State Government on an 80:20 basis; the project budget was subsequently adjusted to AUD 7.2 million, with each level of government contributing 50%. In the 2024 community consultation, 70% of respondents supported the intersection upgrade plan, with heavy vehicle access and signal timing being the key focuses of the optimization.
