Construction Begins on the Goorganga Overtaking Lanes Project on the Bruce Highway in Australia

The project is located approximately 10 kilometers south of Proserpine and will build northbound and southbound overtaking lanes on the Mackay–Proserpine section, with a total upgrade length of about 2 kilometers, while also carrying out pavement and lighting upgrades at the Gunyarra Road intersection. According to the project page of the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, main construction began in August 2026.

The scope of works includes approximately 2 kilometers of road upgrade, new northbound and southbound overtaking lanes, and a divided carriageway layout; pavement treatment and lighting facility upgrades will also be carried out at the Gunyarra Road intersection. The project is jointly funded by the Australian Federal Government and the Queensland State Government. Early procurement documents listed the works as an open market procurement project, with a TIC-CO contract form and an estimated contract value range of AUD 10 million to AUD 25 million.

The Goorganga overtaking lanes project had previously completed the planning and design phases. Early options from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads set the project length at approximately 1.8 kilometers and planned to add two-way overtaking conditions on this section; as of August 2026, the official project status has been updated from the planning phase to the construction phase.

Detailed design is being carried out in parallel for a flood immunity upgrade project on the same section. The planning area is located between Thompson Creek and Lethebrook, and will involve local raising and realignment of 10.6 kilometers of the Bruce Highway, the construction of two new bridges at Goorganga Creek and Lethebrook Creek, and upgrades to drainage culverts as well as the Lethebrook Road and Lascelles Avenue intersections. This flood immunity project is currently in the early design stage and is at a different construction milestone from the already-started overtaking lanes project.

The Bruce Highway overtaking lanes project is part of Queensland's Bruce Highway Upgrade Program. As of 2026, the overall upgrade program has delivered a cumulative total of 100 new overtaking lanes, 175 bridges or overpasses, and 255 kilometers of wide centerline treatment. The Australian and Queensland governments have also allocated AUD 9 billion in funding for the Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program, with the Federal Government contributing AUD 7.2 billion and the Queensland State Government contributing AUD 1.8 billion.
