Los Angeles I-105 ExpressLanes Project Receives $802.5 Million Federal Loan
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 8, the U.S. Department of Transportation, through the Build America Bureau and the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) program, provided an $802.5 million low-interest loan to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority for the I-105 ExpressLanes project. The project has now entered the construction phase and will convert the existing high-occupancy vehicle lanes on Interstate 105 and add new express toll lanes in certain segments.

The project extends from Sepulveda Boulevard to Studebaker Road/I-605 and plans to convert the existing high-occupancy vehicle lanes into two-way ExpressLanes, creating two express lanes in each direction between I-405 and I-605. The work also includes widening 20 bridges, building or modifying retaining walls and sound walls, roadway paving, traffic signs, and a dynamic tolling system.
LA Metro has divided the project into three construction segments. The first segment runs from Sepulveda Boulevard to Central Avenue, where roadway widening, sound wall and retaining wall construction are currently underway, along with bridge or underpass structure work at seven locations. The next phase will install new tolling system infrastructure in the median. This segment is scheduled to open to traffic in 2028.
The second and third construction segments continue eastward to Studebaker Road/I-605, with preparatory work already underway in the later segments and main construction planned to advance in 2026. LA Metro currently estimates that the entire I-105 ExpressLanes project will be completed in 2029.
Once the express lanes are completed, eligible carpools and buses may use them free of charge, while single-occupancy vehicles will pay a dynamic toll based on traffic congestion levels. Toll revenue generated by the project will be used for operations and safety services and reinvested in public transit, roadway, and active transportation projects along the corridor.
