en.Wedoany.com Reported - A prototype light rail vehicle developed independently by Thailand is undergoing trials on the campus of Rajamangala University of Technology Isan (RMUTI) in Khon Kaen, northeastern Thailand. Named the Luk Isan Tram, the three-car train features dual-mode power supply (overhead catenary and battery), can accommodate 120 passengers, and is currently running on a 450-meter test track.

The tests cover the vehicle's performance on straight and curved tracks, while also evaluating key components independently developed by the university's research team, including the braking system, traction system, and wheel sets. Engineers are also validating locally developed rail fastening systems, rail pads, and grooved rail pads to ensure the prototype meets the performance and safety standards required for future operations. The prototype is expected to enter regular service next year, initially serving university faculty and students, with plans to extend the line within Khon Kaen Province.

RMUTI stated that the project is based on international railway engineering standards, drawing on global best practices in design, safety, control systems, and maintenance, while adapting to Thailand's actual operating conditions. Of the components, 80% are produced locally in Thailand. The research funding for the project is provided by the Program Management Unit for Competitiveness (PMUC) of Thailand, with a duration of three years.

In addition to vehicle testing, the test track at the Khon Kaen campus has been developed into a large-scale rail transit experimental platform. Students, faculty, and researchers can participate in hands-on activities covering railway system design, manufacturing, installation, testing, maintenance, and operations management.

RMUTI stated that the university plans to establish the Khon Kaen campus as a regional center for rail transit education, research, and innovation, aiming to cultivate professional talent for Thailand and promote the gradual establishment of an independent and controllable rail transit industry system in the country.
