en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Clark Art Institute has released renderings of a new wing designed by Selldorf Architects, with landscape architecture by Reed Hilderbrand. Named the Aso O. Tavitian Wing, it will serve as the permanent home of the Aso O. Tavitian Collection, which brings together 21st-century European artworks. The addition will complement the original 1955 museum building and the Manton Research Center.

Designed by architect Daniel Perry, the Clark Art Institute opened in 1955 in Williamstown, Massachusetts. In 2014, the institution completed a series of additions designed in collaboration with Tadao Ando, Selldorf Architects, and Reed Hilderbrand. Selldorf stated that the new wing complements each adjacent volume while maintaining a distinct architectural identity and layout.

Acquired by the Clark Art Institute in 2024, the Tavitian Collection includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, and decorative artworks, representing one of the largest donations in the institution's history. Many pieces in the collection, particularly smaller objects, are best appreciated up close, and the galleries will be designed accordingly.

The new wing will feature 12 galleries on a single level, connecting the original 1955 main museum building with the Manton Research Center, built in 2014. Both the original building and the Manton Research Center have recently been renovated by Selldorf Architects.

Selldorf Architects has specified a stone finish for the new wing that matches the adjacent buildings, along with multicolored veined marble in a custom pattern. Selldorf noted that the scale, materials, use of natural light, and views of the landscape will allow visitors to appreciate artworks in new galleries that are both intimate and memorable in proportion. The galleries focus on the experience of the exceptional collection and guide visitors to enjoy the surrounding Berkshires and the Clark campus.

Site plan

Construction of the wing is expected to begin in January 2027, with completion planned for 2028.
