en.Wedoany.com Reported - Repsol has supplied 2,800 tons of bioethanol to the container ship "Antonia Maersk," marking the first such bunkering operation at the Port of Barcelona.
The operation was carried out by Repsol's latest fuel supply vessel, "Bahía Candela," operated by Mureloil and designed to deliver both conventional marine fuels and new energy products.
During the bunkering process, the "Bahía Candela" operated using its battery system, achieving zero local emissions during fuel transfer and further reducing the environmental footprint of the operation.
Prior to this operation, Maersk had tested ethanol on one of its smaller vessels—the 1,800 TEU feeder ship "Laura Maersk." That vessel became the world's first dual-fuel container ship capable of running on methanol in 2023.
Maersk has 23 dual-fuel container ships designed to operate on methanol. The company is still exploring ethanol as an alternative fuel for these methanol vessels. The "Laura Maersk" has sailed using 100% ethanol as well as blends of ethanol and methanol.
The head of the Port Authority of Catalonia stated that this operation demonstrates that alcohol-based marine fuels can already be supplied efficiently and scaled up quickly.
