en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Johannesburg civic movement organization Jozi My Jozi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Cisco, making the city part of Cisco's "Global 40 Communities" program and the only African city selected for the initiative.
Cisco plans to support 40 cities worldwide over the next decade in improving urban resilience, digital inclusion, and economic growth through technology, funding, skills development, and strategic partnerships. Johannesburg is the third city selected for this program, following Western North Carolina and Mumbai.
The partnership, named "Masibambisane," was launched last Friday. Jozi My Jozi will serve as Cisco's lead local entity, bringing together over 50 organizations from businesses, academia, civil society, communities, and the City of Johannesburg to drive urban renewal initiatives.
Cisco Senior Vice President and Chief Social Impact and Sustainability Officer Brian Tippens traveled from the United States to South Africa to witness the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding alongside Jozi My Jozi CEO Innocent Mabusela. Tippens stated that the program aims to create measurable, long-term change by combining Cisco's technology, expertise, and global partnerships with local leadership. The collaboration covers four strategic pillars: digital education and skills training, connected safety, smart mobility, and responsible giving and community activation.
According to Tippens, Cisco's contributions in Johannesburg include deploying smart network infrastructure, Meraki cameras and sensors, and Splunk analytics software to collect and analyze data from connected infrastructure. This also includes smart streetlights capable of gathering traffic and environmental data, helping authorities manage traffic flow and public safety. The specific technologies deployed will depend on city priorities.
Mabusela explained that this partnership builds on the work already undertaken by Jozi My Jozi. The first pillar focuses on connected safety; the organization has been installing solar-powered streetlights and plans to integrate surveillance cameras and digital connectivity to establish a proactive security system. The second phase connects these systems through a digital platform to analyze data in real-time, improving policing, emergency response, and crime prevention. The second pillar centers on digital education and skills development. Jozi My Jozi has already introduced digital skills, programming, and robotics to schools through digital learning centers. Programs like the Cisco Networking Academy will help expand these initiatives beyond Johannesburg, ultimately covering all of South Africa. The third pillar involves a technology-driven approach to community giving. The organization is partnering with the blockchain platform Zlto to develop a system that enables homeless individuals to register and receive digital donations instead of cash. Donors can track how their contributions are used, and volunteers participating in city clean-ups and community projects can earn digital rewards redeemable for groceries, electricity, and other essentials. Cisco's technology ecosystem will provide the infrastructure needed to scale this platform while enabling Johannesburg to learn from other cities participating in the "40 Communities" program. The fourth pillar focuses on smart mobility and public transportation, including technologies such as sensor-based parking, connected transportation infrastructure, and intelligent traffic systems.
The Memorandum of Understanding is valid for three years, during which both parties will develop detailed implementation plans and measurable goals. Cisco stated that this decade-long global program will combine technology, funding, and expertise, with investment levels tailored to each community's needs. Artificial intelligence is expected to play a central role across all four pillars. Mabusela noted that AI will help the organization analyze vast amounts of information to identify priority areas and allocate resources. Tippens pointed out that Cisco's role includes helping everyone thrive in the AI era through education and digital skills. The company's curriculum development and delivery plans will focus on AI skills to ensure learners gain certifications and AI competencies. He also stated that AI will underpin initiatives ranging from connected transportation and public safety to blockchain-driven community giving, while helping city stakeholders analyze data and make more informed investment decisions.
The City of Johannesburg acknowledged last year that it had encountered multiple setbacks in pursuing its smart city vision due to fragmented initiatives and inadequate governance structures. Through its draft Integrated Development Plan for 2025/26, the city stated it would refocus on strategic priorities for digital transformation and infrastructure. The draft noted that the city faces challenges such as ineffective governance structures, poor planning, an outdated ICT environment, and the lack of a mayor-approved implementation plan, failing to "keep pace with new technologies." The city plan indicated that the smart city strategy is under review pending mayoral approval. In recent years, Johannesburg has experienced multiple changes in mayoral leadership, exacerbating policy uncertainty. The draft proposed the need for a renewed strategic focus on strengthening infrastructure, governance, and digital transformation, making the transformation of Johannesburg into a smart city a strategic priority.
