€19 Million Museum Renovation Project Breaks Ground in Galway, Ireland
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 7, Galway City Council launched the extension and renovation project for Galway City Museum, with a total investment of approximately €19 million. Carey Building Contractors has been confirmed as the construction contractor and has commenced work on site. Fáilte Ireland, Ireland's tourism development agency, is providing €12.6 million in funding for the project, with the remaining construction costs covered by Galway City Council. The project will involve a comprehensive renewal of the existing museum, surrounding historic buildings, public spaces, and infrastructure.

The core scope of the works includes the construction of a new three-storey extension building, which will be connected to the existing Galway City Museum and the historic Comerford House building. According to public procurement documents, the new building will feature a steel frame with a CLT/Glulam engineered timber structural system, with a floor area of approximately 516 square metres and piled foundations. The building is located adjacent to the Spanish Arch, a National Monument, and above an archaeological site, while also lying within a flood risk zone. As a result, the project also includes targeted foundation, drainage, and flood defence works. Upon completion, the new building will provide additional space for exhibitions, collection storage, and visitor services, along with new staircases, lifts, and mechanical and electrical systems suitable for museum use.
The project will also renovate the protected historic building Comerford House, upgrading its internal and external finishes, roofing, structure, and mechanical and electrical installations to accommodate new exhibition, visitor services, and staff functions. The existing Galway City Museum will undergo concurrent refurbishment, including adjustments to entrances and exits, the installation of new steps and an accessible platform lift, the addition of canopies and display windows, and the relocation of associated electrical services. The public spaces between Museum Close and the Spanish Arch and Comerford House will be redeveloped with new hard and soft landscaping.
The renovation will also create a new viewing point at the Spanish Arch, enhance the museum's exhibition and education spaces, improve overall accessibility, and upgrade structural and drainage systems. The Galway City Council project development team is responsible for project governance and coordination during the construction phase. The project was originally proposed in 2019 with an initial cost estimate exceeding €10 million; the investment scale was subsequently increased due to redesign of the scheme, expansion of the scope of works, structural repairs to existing buildings, adjustments to mechanical and electrical systems, and additional flood defence and drainage requirements. The overall project valuation published in May 2026 was €19.3 million, while this commencement announcement cites a figure of approximately €19 million.
Upon completion, the existing museum, the new three-storey extension, and Comerford House will form an integrated cultural facility. Fáilte Ireland estimates that within 10 years of the renovated project becoming operational, it could attract approximately 820,000 additional domestic and international visitors and generate around €47.3 million in direct visitor expenditure.
