en.Wedoany.com Reported - Korea Southern Power Co. (KOSPO) has built the nation's first central contract market-type long-cycle battery energy storage system (BESS) to address renewable energy output control issues in the Jeju region.

The company announced on the 20th that the "Jeju Andeok BESS" completion ceremony was held on the 16th of this month in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju. This project was selected through a public tender for the ESS central contract market promoted by the Korea Power Exchange (KPX) and is the nation's first long-cycle BESS project, having commenced commercial operations in March this year. The central contract market type refers to a method where the Korea Power Exchange selects operators through public bidding and signs contracts to provide power system stabilization services, reducing renewable energy output control and supporting stable grid operation.

Located in Hwasun-ri, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si, the Jeju Andeok BESS is a large-scale energy storage facility with an installed capacity of 23 megawatts (MW) and a battery capacity of 92 megawatt-hours (MWh). The project was selected through a public tender by the Korea Power Exchange in November 2023, began construction in Korea for the first time in February last year, and started commercial operations in March this year.

With the rapid growth of renewable energy generation facilities such as solar and wind power in the Jeju region, output control phenomena occur when power supply exceeds demand. KOSPO predicts that the Jeju Andeok BESS will serve as a core infrastructure, enhancing system operational flexibility and strengthening the foundation for stable power supply.

KOSPO CEO Kim Jun-dong stated, "While committed to building a stable power grid, we will further solidify win-win cooperation with local residents to realize social value."
