The long-term performance of polyethylene pipes depends on the expected performance of each welded joint. Despite continuous advancements in materials, equipment, and welding techniques, joint quality still relies on adherence to qualified welding procedures and the skill and experience of the operator. A high-quality butt fusion joint should become an integral part of the pipe, achieving the same design life as the pipe itself, which requires proper inspection, interpretation, and, when necessary, testing to confirm that the joint has been correctly made.
The new edition is significantly expanded compared to the previous version, adding photos, examples, and explanations to help installers, inspectors, asset owners, and engineers consistently assess weld quality. Regarding butt fusion welds, the guide describes key characteristics of acceptable welds, including bead profile, symmetry, alignment, and measurable acceptance criteria, helping to identify visual indicators during the welding process that may signal problems.
