en.Wedoany.com Reported - The European Imagine-B5G project has recently concluded, deploying and activating an advanced 5G private network, 5GVLCPortLab, at the Port of Valencia in Spain. Operating as a testing platform, this network validates industrial applications in a real-world environment.
Co-funded by the Horizon Europe program, the initiative is coordinated globally by the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), with active participation from the Valenciaport Foundation and collaboration from the Port Authority of Valencia (APV), which provides the necessary facilities.
The impact of the project's achievements has been formally recognized by the European Commission, which has included five pilot projects conducted in the Port of Valencia area among the top ten port technology innovations across Europe.
The deployed infrastructure supports five pilot projects focused on port safety, management, and efficiency. The first pilot, the ADAPT-G project, involves drone surveillance, combining unmanned aerial vehicles with mixed reality glasses for real-time monitoring of entry and exit points and restricted areas. The second pilot, the Rescue-5G project, supports maritime rescue operations by enabling remote real-time control of unmanned surface vessels for maritime visual inspections, search, and rescue missions. The third is the 5G-Virtufix project, offering an assisted maintenance solution that uses augmented reality and artificial intelligence to allow operators to repair complex machinery with remote expert support, reducing downtime. The fourth pilot, Portsafe-B5G, focuses on workplace safety and intelligent analysis, integrating a platform of cameras, drones, and automated ground vehicles to detect unauthorized entry and check the use of personal protective equipment. The fifth is the Abyss-5G project, concerning maritime safety and surveillance, integrating 5G connectivity with autonomous surface vessels for monitoring, environmental control, and coastal rescue missions, reducing costs and personnel risks.
The Valenciaport Foundation participates in international alliances aimed at introducing disruptive technologies into the logistics-port ecosystem. The practical experience gained in managing these private networks paves the way for expanding the technology to high-demand operational areas such as container terminals, while laying the groundwork for the future evolution to 6G. To ensure research continuity, the foundation is already engaged in new European initiatives, including the 5G-Valenciaport project (funded by the CEF program) and the COP-PILOT project (Horizon Europe).
Additionally, the Valencia Port Employment Center (CPE) continues to make progress in consolidating its alcohol and drug protocol, establishing an increasingly integrated and coordinated prevention system. Focused on health monitoring and workplace well-being, the program has successfully passed its initial implementation phase and has become a routine preventive practice. The most recent summary meeting confirmed very positive progress at the organizational, confidentiality, and technical coordination levels, with dockworkers showing cooperation and acceptance towards the testing.
Experience gained from implementing random checks demonstrates that the model can adapt to the different spaces and dynamics of the Valencia docks. After the facilities of APM Terminals and CSP Spain served as starting points for rapid team deployment, the model was subsequently replicated at MSC and Valencia Terminal Europa (VTE). In the first three infrastructures, checks focused on container operations, while at VTE, interventions targeted roll-on/roll-off shipping.
Between May 2025 and May 2026, a total of 1,356 medical examinations were conducted, which systematically included 140 random substance tests, equivalent to daily screenings from Monday to Friday. Furthermore, over the past six months, four random checks were carried out directly in the work environment, covering 46 active workers. The Valencia CPE protocol eschews punitive approaches, providing social and personalized support in all cases to safeguard the health and safety of the work environment.
