Based on the GSMA SGP.32 standard, this product enables rapid switching of service providers and remote management of SIM profiles.

According to Telefónica Tech, the combination of Thales' eSIM technology with its managed IoT platform Kite allows users to select operators for specific geographic regions, manage subscriptions, and obtain a unified view of global connectivity from a single interface. The operator stated that this service can integrate connectivity capabilities from both the Telefónica Group and third parties. The main advantages of the system include enhanced flexibility for international projects, shortened operational cycles, and reduced technical barriers.

Juan José González Menaya, Head of IoT Connectivity at Telefónica Tech, stated that this new eSIM-based product further confirms the company's commitment to providing advanced, global, and flexible connectivity to meet the increasingly complex demands of the IoT market. Eva Rudin, Executive Vice President of Mobile Connectivity Solutions at Thales, added that this collaboration supports Telefónica in driving the next phase of secure IoT adoption worldwide. This marks Telefónica's second announcement within a week related to the application of flexible eSIM technology in IoT projects, following its German subsidiary's demonstration of a solution developed in partnership with specialized provider Crout.

The SGP.32 standard aims to simplify the remote management of eSIM profiles on IoT devices that typically lack screens, keyboards, or direct user interaction. Unlike earlier approaches, the new architecture enables enterprises to manage large device fleets through a single system without physically replacing SIM cards. This is particularly important for smart meters, logistics sensors, industrial equipment, connected cars, and devices deployed across multiple countries. Centralized profile management can reduce on-site intervention costs and accelerate switching to more economical or reliable operators. At the same time, it improves resilience, as devices can obtain backup profiles if the primary network is unavailable.

Security remains critical, as a compromised profile management system could affect a large number of devices simultaneously. Therefore, the GSMA specification defines authentication, communication protection, and profile lifecycle monitoring. When selecting a platform, enterprises must examine coverage, roaming conditions, regulatory requirements, and the availability of local networks. Integration capabilities with existing device management, billing, and analytics systems are also important. The proliferation of SGP.32 solutions indicates that the IoT connectivity market is gradually shifting from standalone SIM contracts to programmable, globally managed communication platforms.
