Manzanillo Port, Mexico, Surpasses 2 Million TEUs in Container Throughput in First Half of Year

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port of Manzanillo on Mexico's Pacific coast surpassed 2 million TEUs in container throughput in the first half of the year, and the port complex is expected to handle over 4 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually by 2026.

According to data from the Manzanillo Port Terminal and Operator Association (Astom), local terminals handled 2.071 million TEUs in the first half of this year, a year-on-year increase of nearly 10%.

The monthly statistical report from the Manzanillo Port System Administration (Asipona) shows that export cargo accounted for 44% of throughput, imports for 41%, and transshipment operations for 15%.

A total of 781 commercial cargo vessels arrived at the port in the first half of the year, averaging 4.3 per day, including routes from Shanghai and Hong Kong. The largest ships to reach the Mexican coast included the APL Fullerton (398 meters long), the CMA CGM Alexander von Humboldt, and the Marco Polo (each 396 meters long).

Among the vessels calling at the port in Colima state, container ships accounted for the vast majority, with 590 vessels, representing three-quarters of commercial cargo ships and 68% of all cargo vessels (including oil and refined product tankers).

Additionally, 86 ships (10% of the total) transported general cargo (in individual units such as bags, pipes, or boxes); 79 carried mineral bulk cargo (9%), 26 transported agricultural bulk cargo (3%), and 84 were tankers (nearly 10%). In the first half of the year, 9 cruise ships also arrived, carrying over 16,000 passengers.
