Chinese experts served as the working group convener and project leader, with experts from Germany, Japan, Finland, France, Italy, and other countries participating jointly. This is the first international standard in the basic field of heat treatment of ferrous metals to be led by China.
The standard defines nearly 300 terms related to heat treatment of ferrous metals such as steel and cast iron, serving as the fundamental general specification for technical exchange, product testing, and trade mutual recognition in global industries including steel, automotive, aerospace, energy equipment, and engineering machinery. This revision restructures the heat treatment terminology system, reclassifying all professional vocabulary into 9 major categories covering the full-dimensional heat treatment process system, including general fundamentals, annealing and normalizing, quenching, tempering and partitioning, aging, surface heat treatment, thermochemical treatment, microstructure, and defects, with clearer logical hierarchy. It incorporates global new technological achievements in heat treatment over the past decade, adding 66 cutting-edge professional terms such as continuous austenitization curve, expanded austenite, and total depth of surface hardened layer, filling gaps in new process terminology. It eliminates divergences in terminology definitions across countries, deleting and modifying over 10 outdated process terms and ambiguous terms. It comprehensively upgrades multilingual alignment, providing a terminology comparison table in 6 languages including English, French, German, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese, with Chinese terminology continuing to serve as the common basic language for global heat treatment.
By establishing a globally unified, multilingual mutually recognized terminology system, this standard will continue to promote the elimination of industrial technical barriers, reduce transaction costs, and ensure product quality across countries, providing key support for global cooperation, technological innovation, and trade facilitation in the ferrous metal heat treatment industry.
