South Korea's Panstar Line Buys 2,700 TEU Container Ship for Maiden Arctic Voyage

en.Wedoany.com Reported - South Korean ferry operator Panstar Line has purchased a container ship from HMM, planning to use it for a maiden voyage on the Northern Sea Route (NSR).

Panstar Line took delivery of the 2011-built, 2,700 TEU vessel "HMM Mombasa" on Sunday and is working with the Korean Register of Shipping to facilitate the renaming process. As planned, the ship will be renamed "Panstar Acro" and is expected to complete polar navigation vessel certification by August 15.

It was previously anticipated that Panstar would charter a vessel for the Arctic maiden voyage scheduled to depart on August 22, but the direct purchase indicates the company is seeking to expand its container shipping business and holds expectations for the Northern Sea Route as an alternative shipping lane. The purchase price was not disclosed, with market estimates placing it at approximately $26 million.

After arriving in Busan, the vessel will undergo additional modifications to enhance its ice-resistant capabilities. The maiden voyage will depart from Busan, calling at Hamburg, Gdansk, and Rotterdam, with a crew of 20, one of whom has experience navigating the Northern Sea Route.

Both China and South Korea are interested in using the Northern Sea Route as a shorter alternative between Asia and Europe. Currently, major liner operators are mostly routing around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid geopolitical risks around the Suez Canal. Voyages from Asia to Europe via the Northern Sea Route are approximately 36% faster than traditional routes, but the route is only open during the Northern Hemisphere summer when the ice cap melts enough for safe navigation.

Panstar Line also operates a liner service between South Korea and Japan. The company stated that shipper feedback on this service has been positive, and it expects at least half of the cargo space to be sold for the Arctic maiden voyage.

Transactions continue in the secondhand vessel market during this period. Newbuilding deliveries and ship sales typically slow down in the summer, but over the past week, MSC took delivery of two 10,000 TEU newbuildings from Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, namely "MSC Maria Marilyn X" and "MSC Stella MX," which will be deployed on the Far East to South America route.

According to Linerlytica's report, MSC purchased the 2006-built, 3,534 TEU vessel "Gerhard Schulte" from Bernhard Schulte Group for $34 million, continuing to expand its fleet. Maersk has also made a move in the resale market, acquiring the 2013-built, 8,704 TEU vessel "Toconao" from JP Morgan at an undisclosed price.
