en.Wedoany.com Reported - S&C Electric Company has signed a new umbrella Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, expanding their research collaboration in grid resilience, reliability, and performance enhancement.

The agreement combines Argonne's scientific capabilities in grid research with S&C's engineering expertise in the development and manufacturing of distribution grid equipment, with collaboration areas covering grid modernization, system resilience, power supply reliability, electrification, and emerging grid technologies.

Ernst Scholtz, Chief Technology Officer at S&C, stated that the grid needs to adapt to growing and continuously evolving demands, a need further amplified by changes in the external environment since the grid was originally designed. In his view, addressing these new challenges requires both new technologies and new ways of collaborating. Combining Argonne's scientific capabilities with S&C's grid expertise can bring promising innovations from the laboratory to real-world applications, helping utilities improve reliability, enhance resilience, and meet the grid's growing demands.

This collaboration comes at a time when the grid faces growing demand, aging infrastructure, and increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events. At the same time, electrification and the rapid expansion of new power generation are presenting grid operators with additional technical challenges.

Monica Neukomm, Director of Grid Programs at Argonne National Laboratory, noted that the rapid evolution of the grid requires close collaboration between industry and national laboratories. Expanding the partnership with S&C creates a platform to advance the research and development of technologies that improve grid reliability, resilience, and performance, while accelerating the deployment of innovative solutions that support the nation's growing energy needs.

The two organizations have a proven track record of technical collaboration. Currently, they are jointly developing advanced ceramic-polymer insulation materials for medium- and high-voltage grid equipment under the U.S. Department of Energy's "Transformer Resilience and Advanced Components" program. Argonne's expertise in materials design, processing, characterization, and testing enables the team to study advanced material systems capable of withstanding higher temperatures and electrical stresses, while supporting longer equipment life and higher grid performance.

This research is expected to inform the future insulation systems of S&C's distribution grid technology portfolio, helping improve equipment durability and reliability under more demanding operating conditions. Both parties stated that the new umbrella CRADA will establish a framework for expanding collaboration into additional areas of mutual interest and accelerate the development of technologies that strengthen grid reliability, support growing electricity demand, and enhance U.S. energy security.
