SLB Secures Contract for Restarting Production from Idle Wells Offshore Brunei
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 18, SLB was awarded a contract by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) to restore offshore oil and gas production, focusing on the evaluation, screening, and well intervention of idle wells across multiple mature offshore fields in Brunei. The contract has entered the award phase, with the project aiming to restore production capacity from some idle wells using existing wellbores and offshore production facilities.

The work begins with subsurface reservoir evaluation and candidate well screening. SLB will determine restoration targets based on reservoir conditions, wellbore integrity, and existing facility capabilities, followed by engineering design and offshore operations. Project management, well intervention, production surveillance, flow metering, and offshore logistics are integrated into a single execution framework, covering the full workflow from identifying restoration opportunities to field operations and performance monitoring.
This project marks BSP's first adoption of an integrated production restoration approach. Compared with individual well service contracts, this contract centralizes geological evaluation, production engineering, well operations, and offshore resource coordination, while aligning surveillance, engineering design, and intervention planning under a well, reservoir, and facility management system. SLB stated that the project will focus on restoring production from idle wells and improving utilization of existing offshore facilities without constructing large-scale new production systems.
BSP is Brunei's largest upstream oil and gas company, with operations spanning onshore and offshore exploration and production. A portion of its output supplies the domestic market, while the remainder is exported. The company has been operating for over 90 years, and some of its offshore fields have entered mature development stages. In its operational update released in April 2026, BSP identified extending the life of mature assets as a key technical and operational priority, and this idle well production restoration contract aligns with that asset management direction.
SLB and BSP have previously collaborated on multiple oilfield service projects in Brunei. In 2014, SLB's WesternGeco was awarded a seismic survey contract covering approximately 1,500 square kilometers for BSP's offshore Punyit field; in 2016, SLB secured an upper and lower completion services contract spanning at least three drilling platforms. This latest award further extends the partnership into cross-disciplinary production restoration for mature fields. The contract value, execution timeline, and the number of fields and wells involved have not yet been disclosed.
