en.Wedoany.com Reported - When a jet fuel supply shortage hit Namibia's main international airport on August 20, Discover Airlines, part of the Lufthansa Group, adjusted its routes from Namibia to Germany, with flights from Windhoek to Frankfurt and Munich diverting via Luanda, Angola, to refuel before continuing their journeys.

Discover Airlines adjusted one flight to Frankfurt and one to Munich on August 19 and 20, respectively. The airline operates 10 weekly flights connecting Windhoek with Frankfurt and Munich. All affected flights departed from Windhoek as originally scheduled, with the operational adjustments primarily involving additional refueling stops and extended flight routes.

The current shortage stems from a batch of jet fuel delivered to Namibia's Walvis Bay port that failed routine quality inspections. Supplier Vivo Energy Namibia quarantined the batch after test results were confirmed, preventing it from entering the airport supply system, and began sourcing alternative supplies of Jet A-1 standard aviation fuel from other channels. Vivo Energy Namibia is the Namibian arm of global energy trader Vitol.

Namibia Airports Company is coordinating airport inventory and alternative supplies with fuel suppliers, airlines, and government authorities to ensure the continued operation of Hosea Kutako International Airport. Edelweiss, the Swiss airline under the Lufthansa Group, may also adjust refueling arrangements for its Namibia flights, and air cargo operations have likewise been affected by the changes in fuel supply.

In May 2026, Vitol was awarded a three-month fuel supply contract for Namibia to help alleviate pressure from international oil price fluctuations and import supply constraints. Namibia's jet fuel relies primarily on imports, and the current supply issue occurred at the port receiving and quality inspection stage, preventing compliant fuel from moving from the port into the airport storage and distribution system as originally planned.
