EU fuel prices up 16.9% year-on-year in July 2026

en.Wedoany.com Reported - According to data released by Eurostat, prices for fuels and lubricants for personal transport in the European Union (EU) rose by 16.9% in July 2026 compared with July 2025, with Portugal recording a year-on-year increase of 16.7%, close to the EU average.

Among the 27 EU member states, 25 countries recorded higher prices than in the same period of the previous year. Romania posted the highest annual increase at 24.2%; Germany and Lithuania both rose by 22.9%; Bulgaria increased by 22.2%; the Netherlands and Finland rose by 22.0% and 20.5%, respectively. Hungary saw a slight decline of 0.1%, the only country to record a decrease; Sweden and Ireland posted the smallest increases, at 1.2% and 3.2%, respectively. In addition, 13 countries recorded higher annual price increases in July than in June, while 24 countries saw year-on-year change rates below those of May, when 4 member states recorded increases exceeding 30%.

On a monthly comparison, fuel prices accelerated compared with June. Across the EU-27, diesel prices rose by 4.3% and petrol prices by 4.7%. Portugal recorded increases below the average, with diesel prices up 2.1% and petrol prices up 1.1%. This trend is the opposite of the previous month—in June, diesel prices fell by 6.4% month-on-month and petrol prices by 4.2%.

Between June and July, diesel prices rose in 17 EU countries, with Poland recording the largest increase (13.4%), followed by Germany (12.7%) and Greece (12.1%). Prices fell in 9 countries, with the largest declines in Cyprus (-7.9%), Sweden (-7.4%) and Ireland (-6.4%).

For petrol, prices rose in 14 countries and fell in 12. Poland again posted the largest increase (17.2%), followed by Germany (11.0%) and Spain (7.1%); the largest declines were recorded in Sweden (-11.1%), Cyprus (-5.4%) and Ireland (-4.1%).
