en.Wedoany.com Reported - Dimension News, August 20 — Brazilian state-owned oil company Petrobras has signed a regular export operation contract for petroleum coke (coque de petróleo) with Porto do Açu, under which the port's multi-purpose terminal (T-Mult) will handle the receiving, storage, and export of petroleum coke. The contract is valid for one year, renewable for up to five years, with an estimated annual export volume of up to 600,000 tons.

Petroleum coke is a high-value-added byproduct of crude oil refining, widely used in industrial fuels, steel and metallurgy, and other sectors. This contract will cover the export logistics of petroleum coke from four Petrobras refineries in southeastern Brazil: REGAP (Betim, Minas Gerais), REDUC (Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro), REPLAN (Paulinia, São Paulo), and REVAP (São José dos Campos, São Paulo). Porto do Açu's multi-purpose terminal features a 500-meter operational berth, and the first shipment is expected to take place at the end of August.

This contract marks the first dedicated petroleum coke export operation agreement between Petrobras and Porto do Açu. Porto do Açu CEO Eugenio Figueiredo stated that since the port began operations in 2016, it has handled 26 different types of cargo, covering solid bulk, general cargo, and project cargo.

On the international market front, Petrobras has expanded its petroleum coke export customer base this year. In the second quarter, the company completed its first petroleum coke shipment to China's Sunstone, making Sunstone Petrobras's seventh new customer in 2026. In June, the company also completed a sale to Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil company. In addition to petroleum coke exports, Porto do Açu provides other services to Petrobras, including preparation work for the sustainable recycling of decommissioned platforms.
