en.Wedoany.com Reported - Dimension News, August 20 — India and Mauritius signed two energy cooperation agreements in Port Louis, including an intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on oil and gas cooperation, as well as a five-year petroleum product supply and purchase agreement between Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and the State Trading Corporation (STC) of Mauritius. This agreement marks India's first long-term oil supply arrangement of its kind with a country outside South Asia.

Under the five-year supply agreement, Indian Oil Corporation will supply petrol, diesel, marine light diesel oil, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to Mauritius, providing long-term supply security and price stability for this highly import-dependent island nation. Mauritius relies entirely on imports for all its petroleum products, with an annual fuel import bill exceeding USD 1 billion. The signing of this agreement comes against the backdrop of energy supply uncertainties caused by conflicts in the West Asia region and shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

India's Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Puri, signed the agreements during his visit to Mauritius. Puri stated that the agreement is a significant milestone in the India-Mauritius energy partnership, noting that India has been supplying petroleum products to Mauritius through IndianOil Mauritius Limited since 2001. Neither side disclosed the specific volumes or other commercial and financial terms of the agreement.

India and Mauritius elevated their bilateral relationship to an "Enhanced Strategic Partnership" in March 2025. Beyond the oil sector, the two countries are also cooperating in the renewable energy field, including India's first floating solar project in Mauritius built by an Indian state-owned enterprise, as well as the Henrietta 8 MW solar power plant.
