Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority: Renewables Account for 88.1% of Net New Power Generation Capacity
en.Wedoany.com Reported - According to the electricity market sector report released by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) of Türkiye, renewable energy accounted for 88.1% of the country's net new power generation capacity between June 2025 and June 2026.
Türkiye's total installed capacity (including both licensed and unlicensed facilities) increased from 119,740 MW at the end of the first half of 2025 to 126,113 MW at the end of the first half of 2026, with 5,613 MW of the new capacity coming from renewable energy sources. During the reporting period, Türkiye's renewable energy installed capacity rose from 73,195 MW to 78,808 MW, with its share of total installed capacity climbing from 61.1% to 62.5%.
Solar and wind energy were the primary drivers of renewable capacity growth. Combining licensed and unlicensed facilities, solar power capacity increased from 23,573 MW to 27,210 MW, a net addition of approximately 3,637 MW; wind power installed capacity grew from 13,476 MW to 15,281 MW, an increase of about 1,805 MW. Together, the two added 5,442 MW, accounting for approximately 97% of the growth in renewable capacity and 85.4% of the net increase in Türkiye's total installed capacity.
By power source mix, as of the end of June 2026, hydropower installed capacity stood at 32.3 GW, ranking first; solar ranked second at 27.2 GW, and wind ranked third at 15.3 GW. Biomass installed capacity was approximately 2.2 GW, and geothermal installed capacity was 1.8 GW. The combined installed capacity of hydropower, solar, and wind reached 74.8 GW, accounting for approximately 59% of Türkiye's total power generation.
In terms of electricity generation, total generation from Türkiye's licensed and unlicensed facilities increased from 171.3 TWh in the first half of 2025 to approximately 174.8 TWh in the same period of 2026. Electricity generation from renewable sources (including hydropower, wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal) rose from 81.3 TWh to 107.5 TWh, a year-on-year increase of 32.3%, with its share of total generation climbing from 47.4% to 61.5%.
