en.Wedoany.com Reported - Iberdrola Renovables Aragón plans to install 11 turbines at the Peñaflor wind farm in the province of Zaragoza. The project aims to meet the electricity demand generated by the large data processing platforms to be built in the surrounding area, with the turbines to be installed near the intersection points of the electricity transmission and distribution system lines.

Iberdrola will invest €61.6 million to install 11 giant turbines at the Peñaflor wind farm in Zaragoza.

The Deputy Government Delegation of the province of Zaragoza has published the administrative authorization application and environmental impact assessment for the project. The turbines use the Danish Vestas V163 design, with a hub height of 118 meters, a rotor diameter of 163 meters, and a rated power of 4.5 MW per unit.

The project execution budget is €61.6 million, with a total installed capacity of 49.5 MW for the plant. The municipalities of Villamayor de Gállego, La Puebla de Alfindén, and Alfajarín will host these wind turbines, with the site selection based on the persistent airflow conditions in the Ebro Valley.

The electricity generated by this plant will be combined with that of a photovoltaic plant in the same area, which is currently under permitting review and will provide an additional 113.42 MW of capacity. When operating jointly, the total capacity will reach 162.92 MW of renewable energy, equivalent to meeting the annual electricity demand of 85,000 residents. The technical solution interweaves the generation profiles of solar and wind power by sharing a single grid connection point, with electricity delivered to the Alfajarín substation, connecting to public infrastructure and accessing the main node. This approach aims to optimize operating costs and make better use of the already allocated connection permits.

The electricity export infrastructure is essential for managing the power consumption required by the planned computing complexes in the area, as these large-scale facilities require high-capacity grid connections. Competitive prices and the availability of clean energy have attracted investment to the Aragón region.

Aragón has an installed wind power capacity of 6,105 MW in operation, ranking second in Spain, behind only Castilla y León. In 2025, the region led with 611 MW of new installed capacity. The province of Zaragoza ranks first nationwide with 4,738 MW of operational capacity. Iberdrola Renovables Aragón manages approximately 600 MW of operational capacity in the region, with several hundred more megawatts under permitting review. The company estimates its economic impact in the region last year at approximately €200 million. The approval of the Peñaflor wind farm is currently awaiting the final decision from the Ministry for Ecological Transition.

The deployment of new facilities in the province is part of the company's strategy to integrate renewable energy generation with high-energy-consuming centers. The proximity of generation points to computing nodes reduces electricity transmission losses. The selected Vestas V163 turbines, with their size and wind capture capability, represent the leading edge of onshore technology, with their height enabling access to higher and more stable airflow in the basin, ensuring high generation efficiency for most of the year. Hybrid operation with the adjacent solar facility will guarantee a more stable electricity supply by combining daylight hours with nighttime wind conditions. The environmental permitting process initiated by the Deputy Government Delegation will determine the final conditions for project implementation.
