Nearly 1 km Elevated Section of Mumbai Metro Line 7A Faces Potential Demolition and Reconstruction
en.Wedoany.com Reported - An elevated structure on Mumbai Metro Line 7A, where civil construction is largely complete, faces the risk of demolition and reconstruction. The overhead electrification (OHE) equipment required for the elevated section exceeds the height permitted by the Airports Authority of India in the airport obstacle limitation zone by approximately 2.5 meters, and work on the affected section has been suspended. If no technical solution is reached, the project, valued at around Rs 25 crore, may require rework.

The issue involves an approximately 1 km elevated section near Vile Parle East, including the Airport Colony elevated station, viaduct, and ramps. Construction proceeded after the project obtained the relevant no-objection certificate in 2022, but the additional height required for OHE equipment was not accounted for during the design phase. The height issue was identified in 2025, and the project authorities have since applied to the Airports Authority of India for a revised clearance, though approval for the increased height has not yet been granted. The civil engineering consultant for the project is a consortium comprising Systra, CEG, and SMCIPL.
According to the progress report published by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, as of February 28, 2026, works on the Line 7A viaduct—including pile foundations, pile caps, piers, pier caps, U-girder and I-girder erection, deck slabs, and parapet walls—have all been completed. Most civil works on the elevated ramps are over 95% complete, and the main structural construction of the Airport Colony elevated station is also largely finished.
Line 7A is an extension of Mumbai Metro Line 7 toward Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, featuring the Airport Colony elevated station and the CSIA underground station, with an interchange to Metro Line 3. The combined approved base cost for Lines 7A and 9 is Rs 66.07 billion.
