SUNOTEC Advances 100MW/441MWh Battery Energy Storage Project in Germany

en.Wedoany.com Reported - SUNOTEC is advancing the delivery of a 100 MW/441 MWh standalone battery energy storage system in Stendal, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, with commissioning scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

The project reached ready-to-build status in the second quarter of 2026, with SUNOTEC leading implementation as a full turnkey supplier, integrating engineering, installation, and long-term operations and maintenance capabilities. The storage project will add significant capacity to Germany's rapidly expanding battery energy storage infrastructure and, once completed, will rank among the country's largest battery energy storage systems.

The Stendal project represents the latest step in SUNOTEC's expansion of its battery energy storage business in Europe. Having installed 6.1 GWh of utility-scale battery energy storage capacity across Europe to date, the company is applying this experience to other markets, including Germany—where the accelerated grid integration of renewable energy generation is driving demand for flexible energy infrastructure.

The energy storage system is designed to store electricity when supply is abundant and release it to the grid when needed. The 441 MWh capacity will provide flexibility to the power system, support the integration of renewable energy generation, and contribute to building a more resilient energy infrastructure.

SUNOTEC CEO Bernhard Suchland stated that the scale of battery storage built over the past few years would have seemed an ambitious target not long ago. Suchland noted that SUNOTEC has installed more than 6 GWh of storage capacity in Europe, and the experience demonstrates that storage is effective and that Europe needs more of these facilities. The Stendal project is an opportunity to bring this experience to Germany, as it represents the type of infrastructure that will become increasingly important as Europe builds an energy system with significantly more renewable energy generation. In Suchland's view, Stendal is just the starting point for SUNOTEC in the German market.

On August 27, 2026, SUNOTEC held a groundbreaking ceremony at the Stendal project site, attended by 65 guests from politics, the energy industry, project partners, and the local community, including Thomas Wünsch, State Secretary of the Saxony-Anhalt Ministry of Science, Energy, Climate Protection and Environment; Bastian Sieler, Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Stendal; representatives of Avacon and WT Energiesysteme; and senior representatives of SUNOTEC and other project partners.

Speakers at the ceremony emphasized the growing importance of large-scale battery storage for Germany's energy system and the significance of continued investment in Saxony-Anhalt's energy infrastructure. The event concluded with a symbolic groundbreaking at the project site.

The Stendal project reached ready-to-build status within the framework of SECURSUN, a joint venture between SUNOTEC and securenergy. As the project moves into the implementation phase, SUNOTEC is leading the delivery of the storage infrastructure, while WT Energiesysteme is currently constructing a 110 kV substation on site to provide the infrastructure required for grid connection of the battery energy storage system. The project combines SUNOTEC's experience in engineering and delivering large-scale renewable energy and storage facilities with its capabilities in the long-term management of integrated energy assets.
