UK's Galliford Try wins £110 million water improvement contract

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Galliford Try's environment business has been awarded a £110 million contract by Severn Trent Water to deliver the River Mease Improvement project. The core scope of the works involves constructing an approximately 23-kilometre cross-regional transfer pipeline to convey treated effluent from the Packington and Measham wastewater treatment works out of the River Mease catchment. The project is being delivered in accordance with the UK water industry's National Environment Programme (WINEP) requirements.

The project pipeline will connect the Packington and Measham treatment facilities and divert treated flows to a new discharge location. Public information from the River Mease Partnership indicates that Severn Trent will need to apply for the relevant environmental permits for the new discharge arrangements, with discharge conditions to be determined by the environmental regulator. The project was previously scheduled to complete the transfer of treated effluent by March 2027, while enhanced phosphorus removal measures at other wastewater treatment facilities within the catchment are planned to continue through to 2030.

The River Mease is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Treated effluent from the existing Packington and Measham wastewater treatment works still discharges into the catchment, and Natural England currently classifies its status as "unfavourable." Severn Trent, the Environment Agency, and Natural England have identified effluent transfer, subsequent water quality permitting, and compensation flow arrangements as the means to progress catchment restoration.

Site works on the project had already commenced prior to the formal announcement of this contract. In May 2026, Severn Trent had begun pipeline construction in parts of Leicestershire, with Galliford Try already involved in site activities as a project contract partner at that time. The announcement on 3 September further confirmed that Galliford Try had been awarded the formal £110 million contract for this project.
