Yamazaki Mazak Invests 16 Billion Yen in New R&D Center, Expanding R&D and Prototyping Area by Approximately 50%

The project will be located adjacent to the company's headquarters and Oguchi Plant in Oguchi-cho, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, with a total investment of approximately 16 billion yen and is scheduled to become operational in August 2027. The facility will be a four-story building with a site area of approximately 14,488 square meters and a total floor area of approximately 18,200 square meters, consolidating research, machine design, machine tool prototyping, and evaluation functions currently dispersed across the headquarters into a single base.

Upon completion of the new base, the area for research, design, prototyping, and evaluation will expand to approximately 1.5 times its current scale. The facility will also undertake the development and prototyping of machine tools manufactured at Yamazaki Mazak's overseas production sites, positioning itself as the group's global R&D hub. After the relevant R&D functions are relocated from the existing headquarters areas, the vacated space is planned to be repurposed for production, to increase manufacturing space and adjust production layouts.

Internally, the project will be reorganized according to a continuous development flow of "design—prototyping—machine evaluation." The machine tool prototyping and evaluation areas will be directly adjacent to the engineers' office space, connected via large observation windows between the office and equipment areas, enabling mechanical designers to directly track prototype manufacturing and actual machine testing during the product development process. The base will cover not only machine tool body development but also the development of automation systems, software, and related manufacturing technologies.

Yamazaki Mazak will also establish dedicated collaborative development areas within the base for external research institutions, suppliers, and startups, allowing joint testing and engineering verification using on-site machine tools. These areas will feature a layout with meeting rooms adjacent to machine equipment zones, with isolation facilities installed around the equipment to meet confidentiality requirements for different projects during collaborative R&D. The company has already listed fields such as Physical AI as joint research content for these areas.

According to the current plan, the Mazak Innovation Hub will be launched in August 2027. At that time, Yamazaki Mazak's existing decentralized R&D system will transition to a centralized operational model encompassing research, design, prototyping, equipment evaluation, and external collaborative development, while part of the former R&D areas will be converted to machine tool production. The company has not yet disclosed further details regarding the general contractor, major equipment procurement amounts, or the specific number of prototyping machine tools.
