US Hermeus Plans Integrated Ramjet-X Testing in 2027
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Hermeus is advancing the development of the Ramjet-X ramjet flight test platform, with plans to conduct sustained high-Mach flight tests using the reusable Quarterhorse aircraft as the carrier.

Ramjets require a considerably high initial velocity to operate effectively. Rather than relying on large, expensive, one-time-use boosters for each test, Hermeus uses the reusable Quarterhorse aircraft to carry the Ramjet-X to the speed and altitude required for release. After release, the Ramjet-X begins ramjet-powered flight, while the Quarterhorse returns for subsequent flight test missions.
The Ramjet-X will also enable Hermeus to offer High-Mach Flight Test as a Service (FTaaS), expanding access to flight environments that have historically been costly and difficult to reach. Customers and partners can integrate payloads, sensors, communications and computing systems, autonomous systems, material samples, propulsion technologies, and other experimental hardware and software onto the Ramjet-X for testing under representative sustained high-Mach conditions.
By providing a reusable platform, launch architecture, and flight test infrastructure, Hermeus allows customers to focus on the technologies being evaluated without having to develop custom high-speed vehicles and test programs for each experiment.
Hermeus CEO Zach Shore stated that high-speed flight testing is extremely expensive and offers limited opportunities; the Ramjet-X provides a way to place new systems in sustained high-Mach environments without building an expensive one-time-use test program each time. Combining speed, sustained flight, and scalability in a single system lowers the barrier to obtaining high-value data from these conditions and accelerates the progress of programs for both Hermeus and its customers.
Development of the Ramjet-X is already in full swing. Hermeus is testing the Ramjet-X's ramjet engine at its HEAT facility in Jacksonville, Florida, while high-temperature structures are being developed at its headquarters in El Segundo, California. Integrated vehicle testing is currently planned for 2027.
