HD Hyundai E&F Completes 290 MW LNG Cogeneration Plant in South Korea

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 14, HD Hyundai E&F announced that the LNG cogeneration plant located in the Daesan Petrochemical Complex in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, South Korea, has been completed. The project represents a total investment of approximately KRW 435 billion, with an installed capacity of 290 MW and a steam production capacity of 321 tons per hour. The plant entered commercial operation at the end of July 2026 following phased trial runs, and this completion milestone confirms the project's full transition from construction and commissioning to formal operation.

The project adopts an LNG gas turbine combined cycle cogeneration system, simultaneously producing electricity and industrial steam within a single energy facility. The electricity and steam produced will be supplied to enterprises within the Daesan Petrochemical Complex, including users such as H&L Advanced. HD Hyundai E&F is an energy company under HD Hyundai Oilbank, undertaking the project's construction and subsequent energy supply operations.

The project EPC was undertaken by Hyundai Engineering. According to its project documentation, the facility is equipped with one gas turbine, one heat recovery steam generator, and one steam turbine, with a contract execution period from November 2023 to September 2026. HD Hyundai Oilbank had previously completed the procurement of major power generation equipment including gas turbines and steam turbines, as well as the selection of the EPC contractor in 2023, and completed the environmental impact assessment process; following the completion of relevant approvals from the South Korean government, the project officially commenced construction in March 2024.

In March 2026, Hyundai Engineering completed the first firing of the project's gas turbine, after which the plant entered hot commissioning and phased testing. According to data published at the completion stage, the project began commercial operation at the end of July after approximately two years of construction, thus forming the implementation timeline of "construction start in March 2024 — first gas turbine firing in March 2026 — commercial operation at the end of July — completion milestone in September."

Regarding fuel supply, HD Hyundai Oilbank previously disclosed that it had signed a long-term LNG procurement contract with Korea Gas Corporation, purchasing approximately 320,000 tons of LNG per year, with the contract supply period extending to December 2034, for the operation of HD Hyundai E&F's power generation facilities. Korea Gas Corporation's public information also lists the "HD Hyundai E&F Cogeneration Plant Natural Gas Supply Project" in its natural gas supply facility construction plan.
