12 Disaster Prevention Projects in Ulsan, South Korea Receive KRW 14.857 Billion in National Funding
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 14, Ulsan, South Korea announced that the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's 2027 government budget proposal has allocated KRW 14.857 billion in central government funding for 12 local natural disaster risk area remediation and urban stormwater runoff reduction projects. Among them, 10 disaster risk area remediation projects received KRW 11.811 billion, and two stormwater runoff reduction facility projects received KRW 3.046 billion.
The budget newly adds the Samsan Natural Disaster Risk Improvement Zone project in Nam-gu and the Yugok·Mujugol Stormwater Runoff Reduction Facility project in Jung-gu. The Samsan project has a total investment of approximately KRW 38.9 billion and will focus on renovating drainage pumping stations, stormwater pipes, and related flood control facilities, with basic design scheduled to begin in 2027. The Yugok·Mujugol project has a total investment of approximately KRW 10.4 billion and will build stormwater detention facilities to reduce the volume of rainwater simultaneously entering rivers and the urban drainage system during heavy rainfall.
The stormwater detention facility planned under the Yugok·Mujugol project can store approximately 126,000 tons of rainwater. The facility will temporarily retain surface runoff during heavy rainfall, reducing the instantaneous load on the urban drainage network and rivers, thereby mitigating water accumulation in low-lying areas and urban flooding risks. Ulsan is currently also advancing the Jeonggol stormwater reduction facility project, and the two projects together form an important part of the local urban stormwater detention system.
In addition to the new projects, Ulsan is also advancing natural disaster risk area remediation in Taehwa, Sinjeong 3, Bancheon, and Naehwang. Among them, the Taehwa project is scheduled for completion in 2026, and the Sinjeong 3, Bancheon, and Naehwang projects are scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. The construction content of existing and new projects mainly involves drainage pumping stations, stormwater pipelines and channels, detention facilities, and flood control capacity improvement in flood-prone areas.
The KRW 14.857 billion in funding has now been included in the South Korean central government's 2027 budget draft and will subsequently enter the National Assembly budget review process. As the new projects enter the design phase, Ulsan's 2027 urban disaster prevention construction will form an implementation pattern of existing projects being completed in parallel with new projects being launched, further expanding the scale of flood control and drainage facility construction.
