Shutdown and disposal costs at Germany's Leuna Polyamid chemical plant could reach 30 million euros

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 15, the administrative authority of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt published its assessment results, stating that after the Leuna Polyamid chemical plant in Leuna entered the shutdown and disposal phase, safe closure and facility protection are expected to require approximately 30 million euros. The company that owns the plant has entered insolvency proceedings, the search for investors has failed to produce results, and management has initiated the shutdown process.

Leuna Polyamid currently has approximately 440 employees. Because the plant site involves multiple types of chemicals and materials associated with accident risks, shutdown is not simply a matter of stopping equipment operation; it requires completing plant emptying, material disposal, equipment isolation, and site risk control in stages in accordance with safety requirements. The German local competent authorities expect that the full closure process may last from several weeks to several months.

Under the current arrangements, the company's insolvency proceedings will officially begin on October 1, 2026. Because the company itself is already in financial difficulty, Saxony-Anhalt needs to set aside funds for safety disposal measures that may be taken over by the public sector. At the beginning of this year, the state had already invested nearly 80 million euros to maintain emergency operations at the plant site and control related risks.

The project was previously operated by Domo. After Domo filed for insolvency at the end of 2025, Leuna Polyamid took over the relevant production facilities on April 1, 2026, but affected by factors such as the rapid rise in raw material prices, the new operating entity filed for insolvency again after about two and a half months of operation. This 30 million euro shutdown and disposal budget means that the Leuna chemical assets will subsequently enter the phase of safe plant shutdown and facility preservation.
