UPC Technology and BASF Deepen Low-Carbon Plasticizer Cooperation
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 14, UPC Technology Corporation and BASF announced the signing of a strategic letter of intent for Low Product Carbon Footprint (LowPCF) products, further expanding cooperation between the two parties in the plasticizer value chain. The signing ceremony was held on September 1 at UPC Technology's Zhuhai site. The cooperation focuses on promoting the application of BASF's LowPCF products in the plasticizer field and supporting UPC Technology in reducing the carbon footprint of its production and supply chain.
Under the agreement, the two parties will strengthen collaboration around low-carbon raw materials and plasticizer product applications, with a focus on advancing the commercialization of LowPCF products for customers in the Asia-Pacific region. BASF plans to leverage the LowPCF product portfolio subsequently formed at its Zhanjiang integrated site to provide lower-carbon-footprint raw material options for downstream plasticizer production, reducing the overall carbon emissions of the value chain while maintaining product performance and market competitiveness.
UPC Technology also presented its low-carbon plasticizer technology solution. This solution uses purification and hydrogenation processes to upgrade and utilize waste polyester materials, producing low-carbon, high-performance eco-friendly plasticizers. Unlike general recycled plastics, which are mainly used for lower-value applications, these plasticizers maintain high standards in color, purity, odor, heat resistance, and processing performance, and can be used in downstream products with higher material performance requirements.
The strategic letter of intent signed this time represents further cooperation building on the two parties' 2024 memorandum of understanding. The two parties will continue to expand the application scope of LowPCF products in the Asia-Pacific market and, around the low-carbon transformation of the plasticizer value chain, collaborate with downstream customers on product carbon footprint, emission reduction pathways, and application solutions. BASF stated that its petrochemical business generated approximately EUR 7.5 billion in third-party sales in 2025.
