US Kymeta Kestrel u5 Satellite Terminal Receives Full European Railway Certification
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 17, US flat-panel satellite terminal manufacturer Kymeta announced that the Kestrel u5 satellite communications terminal has obtained full railway certification from TÜV Rheinland Germany, complying with railway industry standards such as EN 50155, EN 45545-2, and EN 50121. With certification completed, the terminal now has a compliance foundation for deployment by European railway operators, system integrators, and train manufacturers. It is still in the commercial promotion and expanded testing phase, and no large-scale train installation contract has been announced yet.

The Kestrel u5 uses a flat-panel satellite antenna architecture with no mechanical moving parts. Its body is approximately 60 cm wide and 8 cm thick, with nominal power consumption below 100W, and it offers IP69K and IP68 environmental protection ratings. The terminal uses a passive cooling design and can be installed on train roofs to maintain satellite communications connections under vibration, rain, snow, and high-speed operating conditions.
The terminal supports full-duplex communication and can provide connectivity via the Eutelsat OneWeb low Earth orbit satellite network, while also offering optional LEO and GEO multi-orbit switching capability. In railway applications, Kymeta positions it for scenarios such as passenger broadband, operational communications, CCTV backhaul, and train safety communications, and it can form a backup connection between satellite links and existing cellular networks.
The Kestrel u5 was officially released in March this year, when the railway version was still in joint development with Eutelsat and customer testing. This TÜV certification advances the product status from railway pre-certification and trial phase to full railway standard certification, but it does not mean it has already entered full commercial operation across European railway networks.
Kymeta plans to continue connectivity testing with several major European railway operators over the next 60 days, including high-speed operation verification at speeds of up to 360 km/h. After completing subsequent tests, the product will further advance toward large-scale deployment in the European market.
