UK's Lower Thames Crossing Road Project Begins Early-Stage Construction
en.Wedoany.com Reported - September 17 news: The UK's Lower Thames Crossing project has entered the construction phase, with work currently underway along the route in Kent and Essex on construction camps, construction access roads, site preparation, archaeological investigations, and ecological works. The project will connect Kent and Essex via a twin-bore road tunnel beneath the River Thames, with plans to add a new road crossing east of London. National Highways has confirmed that construction began in 2026, with traffic opening planned for the early-to-mid 2030s.

The project route is approximately 14.3 miles long, including two road tunnels approximately 2.6 miles long beneath the River Thames. A single large tunnel boring machine will excavate the two parallel tunnels sequentially, with equipment approximately 16.4 meters in diameter, approximately 120 meters long, and weighing more than 5,000 tonnes. National Highways has finalized the tunnel boring machine supply plan; the equipment is planned to be shipped by sea to the Port of Tilbury, with tunnel boring to begin in 2028.
Project construction is divided into several major work packages. The roads north of the Thames will be delivered by Balfour Beatty, the roads south in Kent by Skanska, and the tunnels and mechanical and electrical systems by a team comprising Bouygues Travaux Publics and Murphy. The contractor teams are currently building temporary construction roads, construction compounds, and equipment and material storage areas along the route.
Early-stage construction has already begun on both the north and south banks of the Thames. A construction access road is being built between the Station Road construction camp and Coalhouse Point in Essex, while site, road, and ecological supporting works are underway simultaneously on the Kent side. The project is also building new ponds, habitats, and ecological compensation areas along the route, and the first Kent nature conservation area has been completed.
The Lower Thames Crossing adopts a large-scale low-carbon construction approach. National Highways has previously stated that the project will become the UK's first major infrastructure project to achieve carbon neutrality during the construction phase, with the construction phase expanding the use of low-carbon concrete, low-carbon steel, electric construction equipment, and alternative fuels, while setting carbon emission requirements for major contractors through procurement mechanisms.
Once completed, the project will connect the A2/M2 with the A13 and M25 road networks. The UK government's annual major projects report lists it as the largest single road investment project in the UK in more than 30 years, and it is expected to nearly double road capacity across the Thames east of London.
The Lower Thames Crossing was granted development consent in March 2025. During construction, the project will also deliver approximately 40 miles of new or upgraded walking, cycling, and horse riding paths, and build approximately 100 hectares of the Hole Farm community woodland.
