LG and Microsoft Expand AI Data Center Cooperation to Explore Cooling, Power and IT Infrastructure Supply

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 22, LG Group and Microsoft expanded their strategic cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence, covering AI data center infrastructure, physical AI and AI transformation. The two sides held a senior management meeting on September 21 at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, USA, attended by LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, among others. The two sides will first explore business opportunities for LG to provide large-capacity cooling, power and IT infrastructure solutions to meet Microsoft's global data center expansion needs.

In the AI data center sector, the near-term focus of cooperation will be on large-capacity cooling systems at Microsoft's key strategic sites, with plans to expand the scope to prefabricated data centers in the medium to long term. Prefabricated data center solutions involve prefabricating major equipment and structures at a factory before shipping them to the project site for rapid assembly and capacity expansion. At present, the two sides have disclosed only supply opportunities and the scope of cooperation, and have not yet announced specific data center project locations, procurement scale, contract amounts or equipment quantities.

LG has already established a product system covering data center cooling sources, liquid cooling and control systems. The AI data center air-cooled centrifugal chiller released by LG Electronics on September 21 has a single-unit cooling capacity of 480–600 refrigeration tons and is paired with a data center cooling management system; in July this year, its 600kW coolant distribution unit passed NVIDIA's AI infrastructure technical validation, and the company also plans to continue advancing validation of 1MW, 2.5MW and 4MW large-capacity CDU products. LG's data center cooling solutions currently cover chillers, CDUs, cold plates and related control systems.

In terms of power supply infrastructure, LG has previously jointly developed DC grid solutions for AI data centers with LS ELECTRIC, LS Cable and LG Energy Solution, covering data center power conversion and energy storage, among other links; LG CNS possesses data center construction, system integration and operation capabilities. The scope of cooperation confirmed with Microsoft this time also includes cooling, power and IT infrastructure, and the relevant capabilities will be combined according to the needs of specific data center projects.

In addition to the infrastructure business, LG plans to introduce Microsoft Copilot and the Microsoft cloud platform for group office staff, and to advance internal AI transformation around security, cost and operating systems. In the field of physical AI, the two sides plan to use data generated at LG manufacturing sites and Microsoft's high-performance cloud infrastructure to carry out the development and training of AI models for manufacturing, logistics and mobility scenarios, and to establish a data loop system for on-site data collection, cloud-based training and model return for application.
