TAURON Plans to Invest Up to PLN 3.5 Billion to Advance the Transformation of Poland's Siersza Power Plant

The main new power source in the project portfolio is an approximately 630 MW open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) unit. TAURON plans to use it as the main power generation facility at the Siersza site after 2030, while also building large-scale energy storage facilities, developing photovoltaic power generation projects, and advancing waste heat treatment projects. The new projects will utilize the site's existing power infrastructure, grid connection conditions, and available land.

The Siersza Power Plant currently operates two 153 MW coal-fired units, with a total installed capacity of 306 MW. Both units use fluidized bed boilers. TAURON has previously phased out other older units at the plant, and the currently retained Units 1 and 2 constitute the active coal-fired power generation capacity.

The subsequent operation arrangements for the existing coal-fired units are directly related to Poland's capacity market contracts. TAURON has clearly stated that the two units can operate under current conditions at least until the end of 2027. The company next plans to participate in capacity market auctions and seek new capacity contracts to cover operation in 2028; the possibility of further operating the units until 2030 also depends on regulatory arrangements at the Polish domestic and EU levels. Poland's transmission system operator PSE completed the supplementary capacity auction for the 2027 delivery year in September 2026 and continues to arrange subsequent capacity market processes for the 2028 delivery year.

In previous capacity market arrangements, the Siersza Power Plant had already secured a capacity contract for the 2026 delivery year. TAURON disclosed at the time that its Jaworzno, Łagisza, Łaziska, and Siersza power plants obtained capacity contracts in the relevant auctions, with the group's corresponding capacity obligations totaling 1,567.434 MW; both 153 MW units at Siersza are centrally dispatched generating units. The newly announced plan further determines the main technical pathway for subsequent new power sources at the site and incorporates gas-fired units, energy storage, photovoltaics, and waste heat treatment into the same investment portfolio.
